Issue #184 Your weekly roundup of insights and resources to help you get more done for the glory of God. In Today’s Issue:
Dear steward, A few years back, I adopted the mindset of thinking in terms of quarters instead of just years. There’s something invigorating about making a fresh start every three months rather than just once a year. And my next fresh start kicks off next week. I want In the past, my natural tendency around this time of year was to start thinking about my big plans for the next year, and I hoped I could just limp across the December finish line. But let me encourage you to treat the final fourth of this year as a kind of mini-New year of sorts. Don’t just survive the year, but finish strong. Here are a few things to consider as you move into the final quarter of 2024.
That last one has become a big emphasis for our Academy members. Each quarter we hold a goal challenge in which we help each other plan God-glorifying goals, then keep one another encouraged and accountable as we work towards them. Our Q4 goal-setting workshop for members is happening this afternoon if you'd like to join us. When it comes to productivity, it shouldn’t be about checking as many things off the list as possible but rather about doing each one with God-glorifying excellence. In a world of fast and cheap, choose slow and costly. You won’t see the payoff immediately, but the results, I’m convinced, will be worth it. How to Plan Wickedly Well (7 mins)Marshall Segal / Desiring God As you make your plans for another year or season, kneel beneath the meticulous and pervasive sovereignty of God. Remember that you won’t go anywhere or accomplish anything unless he wills. You won’t live unless he wills. Who You Become is More Important Than What You Accomplish (4 mins)David Kaywood / Pastors & Productivity A good reminder for productivity-minded pastors. Don’t let your gifting outpace your character. Don’t let your accomplishments outpace your godliness. There is something about success and accomplishments that can pose a threat to your spiritual life. The higher you go in ministry, the more it will hurt — and the more people you will hurt — if you fall. John Mark Comer and Practicing The Way (11 mins)Tim Challies Thus, I would suggest great caution with Comer’s teaching and urge you to count the cost of embracing it. I share the concerns Tim Challies lays out in this article. This is why, despite the apparent overlap between my focus on Christian productivity and some of the themes Comer is known for—the ruthless elimination of hurry and building personalized disciplines with a “rule of life”—I have refrained from recommending his material. 🖋A DOSE OF WISDOMQuote of the Week"A true Christian is a wonder because he is the most content but the least satisfied. He is content with a morsel of bread and a little water in the jar, yet he is never satisfied by a little grace. Read or listen in your browser or watch on YouTube. Starting a side project to make some extra cash can be tempting. But make sure you count the cost before jumping in with both feet. Over the years, I’ve taken on numerous side hustles: I’ve built websites, produced wedding videos, and even started Redeeming Productivity—now my full-time work—as a side project. Through these experiences, I’ve made plenty of mistakes and learned a few valuable lessons about the tricky business of side hustles....
