⏳Distraction-Free Seasons

Issue #52: Jonathan Edwards, Free Productivity Course, Your Personal Productivity Stack, Four-Day Workweeks, Google Search Is Dying, and more.
⏳Distraction-Free Seasons

“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.” (Proverbs 4:25).

Dear steward,

Sometimes to do your best work you need to retreat from the noise for a while.

I’m putting the finishing touches on a book manuscript this week and next, and it’s demanding a lot of concentration. To try and stay on task I’ve employed everything from my productivity bag of tricks.

  • Noise-canceling headphones
  • Time blocking
  • Pomodoro timers
  • Internet blockers

But I’ve been intrigued by how having a deadline can both help me focus and, at the same time, make me even more desirous of distraction. And I’m willing to bet you’re the same way.

Over on the blog, I wrote more about this phenomenon and the usefulness of Distraction-Free Seasons for fighting it.

A few things before we get into this week’s Roundup:

  • Registration is now closed for Redeeming Productivity Academy, but you can join the waitlist to be notified when we reopen again in the Spring.
  • The Master’s Seminary has made my course on Stewardship & Productivity free this month. This is a 10-week course I taught as part of The Institute for Church Leadership. Grab a seat while it’s still free.
  • Thank you to everyone who picked up a copy of my book A Student’s Guide to Gaming! I’ve been so encouraged by the feedback and stories you’ve shared with me. If you have read the book, could you do me a favor and take a few minutes to write a short review on Amazon or Goodreads? Thank you!

Okay, let’s get into the Roundup!

✨ New on Redeeming Productivity

🎙The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards with Matthew Everhard (79 mins)

The Puritans were serious about living lives that count for God’s glory. In this episode, I speak with pastor and Jonathan Edwards scholar, Matthew Everhard. We talk about what modern Christians can learn from Edwards’s 70 resolutions. We also talk about the value of weekly routines and what Matthew has learned from taking notes using the same systems Edwards did.

Make sure you're subscribed to the Redeeming Productivity Show so you don't miss an episode.

Google Search Is Dying (4 mins)

If you’ve noticed the quality of the results you find from using Google is diminishing, you’re not alone. This article explains why. (Heads up, there are one or two unsavory words in this piece).

“If you’ve tried to search for a recipe or product review recently, I don’t need to tell you that Google search results have gone to ____. You would have already noticed that the first few non-ad results are SEO optimized sites filled with affiliate links and ads.”

I know many of you have read and benefited from Michael Hyatt’s books or his Full Focus Planner. Looks like the company is now going all-in on productivity with this name change.
